Osama Bin Laden Found Hanged Virus Hoax
What I like about virus hoaxes is the social engineering aspect of them, they are marketing but on the dark side and they work surprisingly well. This particular one relies on a well known figure who at the time of release was making headlines the world over.
This one is and isn't a hoax and has been used a variety of times since it's first creation. In 2004 a message was posted on several thousand newsgroups with the subject "Osama Bin Laden Found Hanged" The text of this newsgroup post is as follows. Osama Bin Laden Found Hanged Osama Bin Ladin was found hanged by two CNN journalists early Wednesday evening. As evidence they took several photos, some of which i have included here. As yet, this information has not hit the headlines due to Bush wanting confirmation of his identity but the journalists have released some early photos over the internet.. http://24.13.130.125:89/OsamaFoundDead.zip Now, as we are all aware, Mr Laden has never been found hanged (not too our knowledge anyway) and he is alive and well, avoiding capture like the sneaky little squirrel he is. However the pictures attached were actually a variety of the hackarmy virus (trojan) which when installed gave hackers complete control over your computer. The URL containing the pictures appears to be an infected host with a simple web server set up on it to allow people to download files direct from the users IP address turned host. Now although this is not your typical virus hoax, being that it did actually contain a virus, it IS a hoax in itself with regard to the fact Binny himself is currently not dead and in fact foraging for nuts and mushrooms in the glorious hills of Afghanistan. So, how do avoid falling for sh*t like this? Simple; 1. Use your common sense.
2. Check file extensions, if it is supposed to be an image or a document do check that the file is actually an image or document file and has the appropriate extensions such as jpg, bmp, txt, doc etc.... If it contains something like exe or scr as the extension it is an executable and you should NOT open it. Run a mile, screaming and waving your arms in the air. (It MIGHT explode)
