Free trials - love them or hate them?
Love them or loathe them, free trials can be useful. They are useful when you are first starting out in business so people can try out your services. They are useful when you are selling a software product and you can code the product to self destruct after 30 days and they are useful when you are offering a service which is fully automated and you do not have to do much work for. But what about when you are an established company offering a service which requires your time and attention; Can free trials hurt your reputation? My grumble. I get approached daily by people wanting to trial my services, some are very pushy about it and others are just trying their luck. I did do a lot of free trials early last year and I went about working my lil sox off to make sure people were happy with their trials, however, I do not have the time to do this now and as such the free trial will only damage my reputation by giving a less than rosy outlook of my services. Yet they still persist. 1 hour on the phone to America and a multi million $ company is still pushing me for a free trial; I'm taking the hard line and saying no. They waffle at me about having a board of directors similar to a James Bond film; I wonder what on earth he is talking about and we fall into a stalemate. But still, he persists and I refuse. Awaiting the next installment of the James Bond Directors saga.... I'm actually quite happy to give the occasional free trial still. Happy to do it for Ecademy members, happy to do it for the little man/woman or people just starting out that need a little help. Not happy however to give up my time to a company earning 100 x what I earn just so they can feel good about getting a freebie which is what this sounded like. Not only that, but as I said, free trials are not just that, they can cost YOU time and money, time is money so it could be costing you double and at the same time, if you are offering a service they will only damage your reputation unless you give the free trial the same level of commitment that a fully paid up client gets. Maybe it's sometimes better to let your business speak for itself. Say no to the free trial! Wear the T-shirt, fly flag and raise the banner high. SAY NO TO FREE TRIALS Be patient and wait for the potential client to get back to you. Free trials. Love them or loathe them? |
